This workshop will build on the results of recent applied research undertaken by the authors, which informs major policy developments in the area of higher education governance in the European Higher Education Area, more precisely with regard to the fundamental values of higher education.
Participants in this workshop will acquire the following learning outcomes:
Gain a comprehensive understanding of the main tools currently used in monitoring the fundamental values of higher education and how they are used in practice worldwide, not only in Europe;
Gain a systematic understanding of the technical characteristics of these tools (with their virtues and limitations), and the policy and social benefits and constraints of their uses;
Become familiar with the common conceptual reference points and the monitoring framework for the six fundamental values of higher education in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA);
Acquire practical skills regarding how to use monitoring tools and the results of monitoring exercises for the purpose of trust building in research, education, and in higher education management and policy.
This workshop will be divided into three parts and will include interactive activities:
Presentation of a comprehensive study with an analytical inventory of main tools and approaches currently used for measuring and monitoring the fundamental values of higher education.
Presentation of the first process of monitoring the fundamental values of higher education in all EHEA countries, currently underway (2025-2027). The six EHEA fundamental values are: academic freedom, institutional autonomy, academic integrity, student and staff participation in governance, and public responsibility for and of higher education. This monitoring process is supported by the NewFAV2 project funded by Erasmus+.
Short simulation exercise focused on using monitoring the fundamental values to build trust between higher education and society. What evidence or references (e.g., selected monitoring reports), approaches, methods, and techniques are available and how to use them in practice, if one is a researcher, educator, or university administrator. Three separate groups will be created to simulate a real-life situation and develop a concrete trust-building initiative in the respective area (education, research, or higher policy and management).
