How do we shape tomorrow's research landscape? Research data infrastructures play a central role in the transition to open, connected and sustainable science. One of the biggest challenges in current research initiatives is to develop cross-disciplinary, accessible and interoperable solutions that facilitate access to and management of research data without losing the user requirements implemented by domain-specific infrastructures. The German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) is a collaborative effort to provide such solutions, laying the foundation for enhanced sustainability in science.

Basic Services within the NFDI are developed through a bottom-up approach, driven by experts in the cross-cutting NFDI sections and shaped by the needs of discipline-specific consortia and infrastructure providers to add value to the whole NFDI and beyond. These centrally managed services are often based on already existing solutions that are expanded to address a broader audience’s requirements and provide technical as well as organisational solutions to service and infrastructure providers, aiming at enabling the consistent and interoperable use of research data across different disciplines. By participating in their development, users and stakeholders can help ensure these services are tailored to meet real-world demands. But what exactly are these Basic Services, who are they targeting, and how can the scientific and technical communities beyond NFDI benefit from them?

In our workshop, we invite infrastructure experts, developers, researchers, data managers and enthusiasts inside and outside NFDI to explore these questions together. We will introduce the concepts behind Basic Services and present the current candidates under development, such as IAM4NFDI (identity and access management) and DMP4NFDI (support for structured Data and Software Management Plans). These examples highlight the range of services being developed, from technical infrastructure solutions to tools designed to streamline research workflows. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss real-world use cases, share their experiences, and identify possible gaps and areas where future Basic Services could improve the needs of the infrastructure and research communities.

The aim of the workshop is not only to provide participants with an understanding of Basic Services but also to engage them in the conversation about how these services can be shaped to fit their needs. By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to explain what an NFDI Basic Service is, which services are currently under development, what is required for integration and how they might contribute to their further development. The workshop will highlight opportunities for involvement, ensuring that the bottom-up development of these services continues to reflect the needs and priorities of the wider research community.
