Uncanny Milieu and Unformed Nakedness in Xiao-mei He’s Renaissance of Its Ashes

If bodies become the matter of becoming, what its expression is like? Deleuze and Guattari try recreate expression in what they call “the unformed matter of the plane of consistency.” I attempt to explore the expression of unformed and becoming matter through a dance. In Renaissance of Its Ashes, a performance of Meimage Dance, the Taiwanese dance director Xiao-mei He lets uncanny processes, passages, and matter return to the bodies in ways that no fixed forms can contain, ignoring the normal territorialization dictated by organs and their functions. Through recreating the bodies, she discovers the critical moments of becoming when matter gains the smallest durations: the breathing of ashes, the stretches of disjoined bones between individuals, the crawling where ivies and reptiles conjoin, the momentary metastability and reincarnations…. The bodies of the dancers become a forest in all forms, seasons, lives, and deaths. The bodies become more naked than bodies, even though starting from spirits finding their bodies in the ashes, intervened by human moving the sacred tables around several times, and ending with the amputated and fragmented bodies in the impassive light. She presents the helpless and raw milieu of creativity against the territorialization of forms. Her expression of bodies persists as nothing but lines and planes of limits, edges, membranes, and milieus of becoming. Through this uncanny nakedness of bodies, I want to explore intensive passages of matter and the expression of becoming.

From Sense to Subject: Deleuze, Lacan, and Embodied Cognition

Gilles Deleuze’s notion of “double causality” resonates with current understandings of meaning-making as synonymous with lived activity. The Lacanian subject accounts for a reading of the self beyond the differentiated, biological organism that nonetheless tracks along with the entanglements and relations of the material body. In both cases, the subject is determined by that which exceeds it, established by an inseparability of (organic, biophysical) activity and meaning. Toward an understanding of emergent subjectivity as such, situated at a point between the biological and the phenomenological, I propose a reading of the subject in both Deleuze and Lacan beyond the differentiated, biological organism that nonetheless tracks along with – as well as draws closer to - the lived entanglements and relations of the material body.
This paper culminates in an analysis of Andrei Tarkofsky’s 1972 film Solaris, which not only ties together the theoretical tracks of the essay, but taken on its own reveals more about human subjectivity than the most exacting realism. As an analogue to the theoretical concerns of the present work, Solariscollapses the binary distinctions of individual and environment, subject and object, individual conscious and planetary cognitive reality, illustrating the central theme of my paper – a rendering of subject and environment as functionally indistinguishable, grounded precisely in the place where “I am not,” in the body of an-/the Other, which is nothing more than the material embodiment of the self.
