A critical review of studies with a deleuzian influence on the field of migrant and refugee education: Mapping an emergent field of literacies research

In the present paper we aim at mapping an emergent field of literacies research that relates to migratory pathways. Since the migratory is a paradigm of our times that incorporates mobility, instability and fluidity, we need new ways of thinking about learning and conducting literacies research. In order to identify Deleuze and Guattari’s influence, specifically on the field of second language education, we conduct a critical review of relevant studies. We review different databases in the social sciences and the humanities from the years 1980 (the release of A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia) through 2020, including studies that are relevant to formal (in classrooms, educational policy documents) or informal education (e.g., family literacy programs, after-school programs, museums), in order to map the variety of perspectives, approaches, and theories in the pool of research that has adopted a rhizomatic approach to perceiving and/or researching (multi)literacies. Refining our corpus with certain criteria, we then code theories and perspectives on language(s) and language education informed by a rhizomatic philosophy, and discuss epistemological, ontological and ethical assumptions of the studies. We conclude pointing out the importance of adopting a deleuzian perspective on second language education and research, in order to make visible the hidden, intersecting and emergent literacies that usually remain inactive on the periphery of the dominant conventional literacies, and we reflect on how education can contribute to the Deleuze and Guattari Studies with its own prisms.

War machines. Quilombos and minority revolution

A proposta deste trabalho é apresentar o quilombo como um conceito de máquina em seus processos de ocupação, preenchimento e invenção de novos espaço-temporalidades. Para tanto, busca a produção de um ensaio que problematize a constituição do quilombo, enfatizando suas estratégias de resistência e luta contra a escravidão, como constituintes de uma topogênese ou de um pensamento heterotópico. A escolha desse objetivo se dá por assumir os movimentos de resistência e luta desses povos como algo que agencia um devir-quilombo em suas relações com a terra e o território - estendendo-se em suas características históricas, culturais, identitárias, entre outras - em contraposição a as formas genocidas do colonialismo. Serão utilizados documentos do período colonial, em especial mapas, reclamações de escravos e pesquisas realizadas. Esses documentos serão pensados ​​em consonância com a filosofia de Gilles Deleuze e Félix Guattari, assumindo suas possibilidades conceituais de apresentar o (s) quilombo (s) como máquina de guerra que engendra processos de resistência e criação de um povo em seus processos de subjetivação. Por fim, haverá vislumbres seminais de uma problematização dos universos micropolítico e macropolítico inventados por esses povos na contemporaneidade a par de uma experiência cartográfica realizada em uma comunidade quilombola do interior do estado de São Paulo. Dadas as frequentes ameaças dirigidas às comunidades quilombolas no Brasil, entende-se que uma proposta de pensá-las a partir de uma gênese heterotópica como um ato de ética, estética, política,

Fabulatory making of a minor video: Intercessors and becoming-other

The paper discusses what I call ‘fabulatory making of a minor video of becoming’, which is part of my doctoral dissertation research that explores the coexistence of migrants in contemporary Japanese society. The video I showcase throughout the paper is titled Watermelons and Humansand is an ethnofiction collaboratively created between myself as a Japan-born northwestern Canada-educated researcher-videographer and a group of Asian migrant youth of a JSL school in Japan. I would treat the video as ‘minor’ (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987; Deleuze, 1989) because a Chinese-heritage male participant who scripted and directed it deterritorialized majoritarian Japanese language, plugged his and fellow participants’ private molecular concerns into the network of molar power relations, and made the production process storytelling whereby removing the utterance referred back to any single enunciating subject so as to invent people yet to come. It is to this third aspect of ‘storytelling’ or ‘fabulatoion’ that the paper draws special attention. Deleuze’s (1989) discussions of Jean Rouch’s entanglement in the ‘ciné-trance’ of his collaboration with his African migrants as ‘intercessors’ in making their ethnofictions can fruitfully navigate through my own engagement in collaborating with my participants. I elucidate how the fabulatory functions of our collaboration might have deterritorialized our pregiven fixed identities and enabled us to undergo metamorphic processes of undecidable ‘becoming-other’ (Bogue, 2003; Rodowick, 1997), as the youth seemed to transform their real situations through their self-invention within the film story, while I attempted to film by undoing my mentality and gaze conforming to colonial discourses.
