The assemblage as redistribution of the sensible: a methodological framework to understand deterritorialisation in literary texts

In this paper, I will relate the concept of "assemblage" (agencement) of Deleuze and Guattari and the "distribution of the sensible" (partage du sensible) of Rancière, in order to show that this relationship opens up a methodological framework to understand how the literary texts deterritorialise and reterritorialise trough language. First, I argue that is possible to understand the redistribution of the sensible developed by literature as the effect of "collective assemblages of enunciation" corresponding to "simulacrum". Then, the process of "deterritorialisation" in literary works could be understood as a redistribution of the sensible, produced by operations like figuration, parody, irony, parataxis and paradox, between others, which re-locates the affection regarding a semantic territory configured by the representational regime. Second, I propose that to trace the nomadic assemblages in literary works, like the "becoming" or the "body without organs", we need to diagram the singular syntax articulated by the aesthetics of a literary work. This diagram could locate the interaction and transformation of the molar and molecular lines with the lines of flight into the textual machinery, without falling into the structural analysis. To illustrate this, I will refer briefly to the novel Sistema nervioso of Lina Meruane, in which the redistribution of pain and desire interrupts the logic of embodiment. Last, I show that the deterritorialisation modifies the common sense and can achieve emancipation, despite Rancière's critique, because it interrupts the semantic and symbolic relations that determines the distribution of powers to be, do or express of a political community.

The runaway male: nonhuman sex and deterritorialization in Washington Irving's Rip Van Winkle

Drawing on the lesson of The Anti-Oedipus (1972), we call “nonhuman” any conception of sex capable of contesting the coordinates of its anthropomorphic representation and, regarding Irving’s short story, any relationship that evades its canonical form: the married couple. It is through the animal that the motif of a nonhuman sex relates to territory. But it is also by means of a movement of deterritorialization that it escapes from sexuality. Insofar as animality is encompassed in the concept of “human”—no less than it is in its reality—nonhuman sex ignores the terms of such a philosophical truism. “The petticoat's reign is over!”, cried the good Rip as he left home for those Appalachian Mountains where his wife's admonitions no longer reach him. Yet, this escapade from domesticated reason to the confines of its axiological landmarks—where ghosts and redskins threaten the all-too-familiar town and “human” boundaries—always undergoes an “animalistic” moment, however fleeting: lateral thrust, breakout, deterritorialization. Our text restores the “myth” of the runaway male (Fiedler, 1968) as an American variant of the schizoanalytic notion of nonhuman sex. We argue that Irving’s Van Winkle stands for a somehow reversed figure of Kafka’s akin refusal of conjugality: the henpecked husband.

INTERSECTING THE HETERONYMIC SYSTEM OF PESSOA WITH DELEUZE & GUATTARIS’ CONCEPTUAL TOOLS (provisional)

Launching the hypothesis that there are strong ties interconnecting the work of Fernando Pessoa and the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari, with special attention to the system of the heteronyms, this essay aims to intersect both magnum opi in what concerns multiplicity in authorship as a deterritorialising practice of resistance. The fact that both bodies of work barely coincided during the lifetime of the authors is a causality that adds to the interest in creating this dialogue. I suggest that Pessoa had, prior to the ouvre of D & G, developed what could be a magnifying illustrator of their philosophy later developed in several facets. This can be symptomatic of an accomplice sensitivity in how to reformulate the position of the I and the Self in accordance to the established idea of Identity, subdued to a major social structure of centralisation of power, that builds up by expanding and conquering territory. I will highlight that Pessoa had developed an ideal project of “practical philosophy” intrinsically related to the concepts developed by the philosophers, and argue that the active practice of multiple authorship can operate as a method to deterritorialise the gravity concealed in identity, by pulverising in a nomadic manner processes of subjectivation, a fragmentary/minoritarian approach that challenges arborescent compliances. I will observe how the two formulas co-work and intersect, recalling the concepts Rhizome and Multiplicity; explore some of the various possible casts of processes of subjectivation - from heteronyms to pseudonyms, to epithets, conceptual personae, and their implications with the concept of truth; and reflect upon the concepts of Becoming, Desire, Deterritorialising and Reterritorializing, and how these embody the modus operandi of Pessoa’s writing.
